Bhubaneswar to switch off lights for Earth Hour on Saturday

BHUBANESWAR: The capital city will plunge into darkness for an hour on March 23 for good. Different government offices will switch off lights in the evening to observe Earth Hour-2013. Earth Hour is a worldwide event organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) annually, encouraging households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour to raise awareness about the need to take action on climate change.

The campaign for energy saving in Bhubaneswar was taken by members of a voluntary organization in 2008 after 2.2 million residents in Sydney first observed the event and switched off lights for an hour in 2007. “We had urged the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA), secretariat and commissionerate police to observe the day by switching off their lights,” said member of the organization Piyush Rout. Lights were also found switched off in some houses, he added. Rout said this year also they have requested heads of several offices, urban local bodies, civil society groups, media houses, business groups, senior citizens and schools and colleges to observe the day.

The day is significant as it sends a message across that energy saving is a responsibility of every citizen, said BMC mayor A N Jena. “Like the last five years, we will observe the day this year too. We will switch off the big lights consuming more energy. All the lights to run office works will remain on,” said Jena.

“This year lights will be off from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm,” said Manas Das, programme manager of the voluntary organization.

Renowned sand artist Sudarshan Patnaik, who has been chosen brand ambassador for observing Earth Hour in Odisha, will run a campaign from 4.30 pm on March 22. The campaign will end at 8.30 pm on March 23. A huge sand sculpture depicting Earth Hour will be made by Patnaik.

Bhubaneswar and Cuttack are twin cities, so both of the cities should switch off the lights. Other then that normal house hold should voluntarily come out for this good reason.
